Native Shrub Identification and Use

Instructor: Ed Davis, UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens’ Horticultural Supervisor and Landscape Architect

Discover outstanding native shrubs that grow in the Carolinas.  Explore how to incorporate native ornamental shrubs in your home landscape.  Discuss the aesthetic qualities, identification techniques, wildlife benefits and landscape uses of many reliably hardy native shrubs.  Learn about cultural practices and maintenance requirements on-site in the Mellichamp Natives Terrace (demonstration garden designed by Ed Davis).  

Learn about plant identification resources including the book “Native Plants of the Southeast” by Larry Mellichamp .  And there will be a short discussion about using smart-phone apps that help with plant identification and which ones seem to be the most effective.

*the suggested text “Native Plants of the Southeast” will be available for purchase at the beginning of class for those interested in having a copy.
