Top 10 Campus Events You Don’t Want to Miss

By: Evan Moore | Campus Events Student Social Media Coordinator

Each year, hundreds of student events are held on UNC Charlotte’s campus. While you probably won’t be able to make it to all of them, we picked the top 10 that you do not want to miss.

No. 10

Late Night Breakfast

You’ll probably value sleep more than ever during finals week, but you’ll want to be awake for this. At the end of each semester, students flock to SoVi or Popp Martin Student Union, depending on the semester, for a free late night breakfast to kick off finals week. While you’re enjoying the eggs, grits and sausage, you’ll have the chance to play bingo to win prizes from the UNC Charlotte bookstore. After you finish eating, be sure to head out to the patio for some kettle corn and live music.

No. 9

Student Organizations Showcase

Interested in joining a student org on campus? Stop by the Student Organizations Showcase and check out the various clubs that campus has to offer. With more than 400 orgs, there’s bound to be something for everyone. An event that normally happens at the beginning of each semester, this is a great chance to meet more  fellow Niners (and if you like free stuff, this is place for you).

No. 8

Chillin’ on the Cone Patio

Usually, near the end of Spring semester, when the weather is warm and meal plans are depleting, you’ll be able to go to the Cone Patio to satisfy your hunger. Burgers, hot dogs, chips, potato salad, cookies and cake are just some of the food items you can load your plate with. While you’re eating, enjoy some live music and enter for a chance to win prizes like concert tickets and Beats by Dre headphones.

Holi Moli

If you’re not familiar with Holi Moli, the picture above should give you some indication of what to expect. Essentially, Holi Moli is an annual event held to celebrate the arrival of Spring. Students throw powders made of different colors at their friends, and it’s a messy but good time. For more on Holi Moli, check out this video.

No. 6

Want to get involved in one of the 15 intramural sports on campus? Maybe you want to challenge yourself a bit more and take part in a club sport? Head to RecFest in late August to browse the different sports organizations at UNCC. It’s rare that you’ll attend an event here without getting fed, and this one is no exception as plenty of local food trucks are sure to be there. Tip: If you’re a fan free t-shirts, get there early. Trust me.

No. 5

MLK Celebration

Every year, UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff come together to commemorate the life, work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This celebration consists of a candle lighting ceremony, musical selections by UNC Charlotte’s Voices of Eden Gospel Choir and remarks from distinguished keynote speakers. Past speakers at the event include political commentator Bakari Sellers, congresswoman Alma Adams and broadcaster Ed Gordon.

No. 4

Haunted Union

For one night a year, Popp Martin Student Union is transformed into a haunted maze during Haunted Union. Bring your friends and try to dodge creepy clowns, zombies and werewolves while you make your way through the frightful labyrinth. And, like any other popular event on campus, enjoy plenty of free food, games and prizes. Also, don’t forget to wear your best disguise for the costume contest.

No. 3

International Festival

Coming in at No. 3 on our list, the International Festival is an experience you don’t want to miss. Experience the culture, customs and cuisines of more than 50 countries by immersing yourself in this day-long summer event. With games, cultural demonstrations and face-painting, this is an event that your whole family can enjoy.

No. 2

Week of Welcome

During the first week of school, numerous events are held around campus as part of Week of Welcome. Events include a Block Party, Pep Rally, RecFest, Convocation and the Student Orgs Showcase. Week of Welcome also features the 49er New Year kickoff concert, where acts like Asher Roth, Mario and Jazmine Sullivan have performed. In the past, comedians Darren Brand and Nate Jackson from the hit show “Wild ’n Out” have performed during the Week of Welcome Comedy Show. There is definitely plenty to do during this week, so keep your eyes open for different events.

Coming in at No. 1 on our list is Homecoming! During Homecoming week, students, faculty, staff and alumni celebrate Niner Pride at a multitude of events including the Homecoming Comedy Show, Trivia Night, Basketball Madness and the Homecoming Parade. All of this leads up to the Homecoming Football Game, where fans head to Jerry Richardson Stadium to cheer on the Niners.
