The South Beyond 6,000 is a program organized by the Carolina Mountain Club encouraging hikers to scale the forty 6,000 foot peaks in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
Those who complete the South Beyond 6,000 (SB6K) challenge earn a patch as well as the satisfaction of having hiked the tallest mountains in the Southeast. View the official rules about the SB6K program here.
Over the next four academic years (Fall 2017 to Spring 2021) Venture is planning to travel to each of the forty peaks.
On this SB6K day hike, we'll summit Blackstock Knob (6,359 feet).
On this out-and-back route, we'll be hiking on the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST), which will traverse a massive ridge to reach the peak. We'll look forward to the openings in the forest which will grant us sweeping views of the surrounding landscape (or of impenetrable fog!). With lichen and moss-covered evergreen trees and commonly misty conditions, the area has an enchanted feel. Check out this trip and reach another one of North Carolina's highest points.
